I love the last
late afternoons of summer
in the garden
when the wind is slightly 
coaxing the final roses off their branches
and the rustling leaves
prove to be a protective foil
for rambunctious squirrels playing tag
in the trees

I walk slowly
in my pink gingham nightgown 
observing how quickly 
the limelight hydrangeas
have turned this year,
so I snip the remaining 
fluffy white ones 
not to miss the chance 
to collect my souvenir 

Earlier this day, I planted 
my autumn herbs
parsley, dill, thyme and rosemary 
and vegetables too
carrots, broccoli, kale and beets,
they will all adore the cooler air
held in silvery clouds
as they grow

And me, yes me
another season coming on
as I stand in the garden 
with so much accumulated wisdom, 
maybe too much wisdom 
I tend to overthink
until the garden pulls me back
to just be
