Go For The Gold Creatively

Go for the Gold Creatively

It is a corny title, I know, but in this case it is aptly stated: when you want to preserve, embellish or elevate something, go for the gold!  We have all heard phrases like, “the gold standard,” when describing an elevated level of achievement. For instance, the Oscar honor, bestowed as the most treasured award in Hollywood for “elevated” achievement is gold. Or what about the phrases, “golden memories” or “golden years” when describing cherished times you want to “preserve?” Metaphorically and practically, recreating the everyday into its golden persona is a manifestation of valuing.

This week I went for the gold by “embellishing” the gorgeous magnolia wreaths on my front door. Magnolia leaves are to the South Carolina as Flowering Dogwood branches are to New Jersey, they are everywhere. Here is a photo of how the wreaths originally looked after a month on my front doors. You can see that the lavish, green leaves were beginning to age, and so painting them gold would preserve their beauty, not to mention unique curb appeal.

First I researched what sort of gold paint would best withstand the constant sun at my front doors, and also the variable and sometimes fierce stormy- weather we experience in South Carolina.  Once I determined the gold spray paint I wanted to use, I removed the wreaths from the front doors and organized a well-ventilated area to spray paint them gold.  It took two cans of gold spray paint and several coats to get even and fully- coated wreaths.  I would recommend wearing sunglasses or protective eyewear, a hat to protect your hair, and I also wore a mask (of course these days that was easy to come by!). After completing the painting, I let the wreaths dry for several hours in the sunshine and fresh air. Here is a photo:

I am very pleased with the final product that adds an elegant welcome to guests with a golden enhancement of a traditional Southern greeting.  I also like the element of repurposing and elevating everyday objects. Hopefully you will be inspired with your own golden ideas in 2022.
