Exercise Inspires Creativity

Exercise Inspires Creativity

Movement is a potent way to achieve creative expression, and I bet you are thinking of dance as an example. Yes, dance in all its variations manifests creativity but other forms of movement do too. Have you ever thought that your golf swing, hitting a baseball or shooting hoops can be a means for cultivating your creativity?

Studies have shown that regular exercise increases brain volume and improves cognitive function, translating into enhanced creativity and writing skills. Sports disciplines that encourage creative expression are growing in popularity as athletes search for the latest trends in physical fitness. Activities such as martial arts, gymnastics, free-running and parkour provide intense workouts while stimulating the imagination.

According to a New York Times article by Gretchen Reynolds in February of 2021,”If you exercise, there’s a good chance you also tend to be more creative.” Studies have shown that walking can be as effective as participating in more rigorous sports and exercise in stimulating creative thoughts. Moving of any sort can spur creativity.  Several scientists contend that the increase of dopamine from physical activity may partially explain the connection to creativity.

Adding regular exercise of any kind to your life can only be a positive for your physical and mental health, and if it inspires your creativity consider that an extra point!
