Add Flowers On Ice
Flowers, and the art of arranging and displaying them at home is a joyful activity that beautifies any living space.
Many years ago, my husband Dan started a tradition of bringing me weekly flowers, especially roses. There were red ones, blush pink ones, lavender and yellow ones, and variegated ones too, white with hot pink petal tips for instance—I was always grateful for his gesture of love. I was also excited to find ways to display the blossoms throughout our home.
Here are some ideas I have acquired throughout the years that I hope inspire you…
First comes the selection of a container for the stems. Depending on what types of flowers you have, the container should be selected to enhance the display and highlight the stems natural beauty. Considering the room and its decor where you will display the flowers can also inspire what container you select. Perhaps you have an urn from your travels, a crystal bowl, or a vase you received as a cherished gift in the room that now can be enhanced by flowers. The vessel you choose will play an integral role in your floral display.
The container selected will dictate the length of your stems and how you display them. In a shallow vessel, you may wish to cut your stems significantly to fill the space while a tall, thin vase will be suited for longer and fewer stems.
Regardless of the kinds of flowers in your collection I recommend trimming them on an angle before placement. Another pointer is to remove any petals or green leaves from the bottom of each flower so you have nothing extraneous touching the water. This tip helps preserve the life of your arrangement.
My favorite piece of advice is to add ice…yes, a few cubes will awaken your buds as they enter their new, watery home! The ice cubes also serve as an anchor for positioning your stems. Gradually they will melt away, leaving you with a gorgeous, floral display.
