Prioritzing Creativity

Prioritizing Creativity

I doubt there is not a person among us who doesn’t come up with ideas they do not pursue. Thinking of an idea is sometimes the easy part, but bringing the idea to life takes doing, and doing is a whole different matter.  When the doing feels like a chore we are bound to table it.  But, are we missing out on what could be fulfilling and fun creative experiences because we do not want to put in the effort?
Recently, someone asked me for my thoughts on how to balance practicality and creativity.  I really had to think about it, and I still am thinking about it, but my first thoughts are that there is really no such thing as “balancing” practicality and creativity.  We all have many things we must do as a practical matter, and I would suppose we often perceive creative pursuits as extras after all of the practical things are accomplished. This is because we prioritize practicality over creativity.

What if instead, we thought that our creativity could fuel our undertaking of practical obligations by giving us more integral energy?  Personally, after engaging in my creative endeavors I feel a deep sense of pleasure.  Since I do, I believe I have new vitality when doing some of the more mundane and practical things I must do.

Perhaps there is no need to balance practicality and creativity.  Rather, consider that by prioritizing your creative ideas from time to time you may discover that you have more motivation to tackle the practical things, and even infuse creative new approaches to doing them.
